چکیده

In this note we examine the implications of Cahn-Hilliard diffusion on mass conservation when using a phase-field model for simulating two-phase flows. Even though the phase-field variable φ is conserved globally, a drop shrinks spontaneously while φ shifts from its expected values in the bulk phases. Those changes are found to be proportional to the interfacial thickness, and we suggest guidelines for minimizing the loss of mass. Moreover, there exists a critical radius below which drops will eventually disappear. With a properly chosen mobility parameter, however, this process will be much slower than the physics of interest and thus has little ill effect on the simulation. ∗Corresponding author. Simulation of Mass Transfer in a Microfluidic Experiment Using the Moving Mesh Method

Introduction: Two phase liquid-liquid systems are used extensively in chemical processes involving reaction engineering and separations. Recently, microreactors are being developed to exploit the very high mass transfer rates that accompany flow on the sub-millimeter scale. Simulation through multiphysical models is helpful for designing these systems. Before a model may be used as a predictive...

Numerical modeling of porosity and macrosegregation in continuous casting of steel

1 ABSTRACT The continuous casting process is a widely used technique in modern steel plants. However, it is a complicated process that is not well understood. The objective of this research is to model the porosity and macrosegregation due to shrinkage related effects and solid deformation in the continuous casting of steel. Solid phase movements due to bulging and variable roll gap are modeled...
